DCVFA Issues First-Ever Early Endorsement: Dr. Oye Owolewa for DC Council
In an unprecedented move, DC Voters for Animals (DCVFA) has issued its first early endorsement in the organization's six-year history, backing Dr. Oye Owolewa for the At Large seat on DC Council.
Founded in 2019, DCVFA has never before endorsed a candidate outside its traditional endorsement cycle. The early endorsement reflects Dr. Owolewa's exceptional track record on animal protection issues and his commitment to making DC a national leader in animal welfare policy.
Dr. Owolewa has long fought shoulder to shoulder with DC voters speaking out against animal abuse. His leadership on animal issues includes:
Creating and campaigning on an Animal Protection Platform for the first known time in DC history
Supporting non-lethal wildlife management strategies
Testifying in support of DC’s Fur Products Prohibition Act to protect animals from the abuses of the fur industry
“I’m honored to be endorsed by DC’s Voters for Animals, our nation capital’s leading political organization dedicated to the betterment of animal treatment and outcomes “ said Dr. Owolewa. “As one of DC’s only elected vegans, I’m truly inspired by the work done by DC Voters for Animals. I’m excited to join their efforts to end DC’s sales of foie gras, fur and other products of animal cruelty.”
Dr. Owolewa has swiftly risen in DC’s political scene, having started as a Ward 8 ANC commissioner before being elected three times as DC’s Shadow Representative. His consistent advocacy for animals throughout his political career has earned him recognition as a champion for animal welfare, amongst other noteworthy causes that he has championed.
“Dr. Owolewa is one of the most promising voices for animals since Mary Cheh was on Council” said Max Broad, Executive Director of DCVFA. “Our early endorsement is a sign of the commitment of the animal supporter voting block to his campaign.”
DCVFA’s traditional endorsement process will commence at the beginning of 2026, with DCVFA issuing its questionnaire for DC Council, Mayor, and ANC candidates. The anticipated timeline is late February for further endorsements, and DC Voters for Animals supporters will be invited to provide feedback to inform the Board of Director’s decision of who to support.
DC residents can update and confirm their voting registration status with DC Board of Elections in preparation of the June, 2026 primary election.
