2024 Candidate Review - DC Council

As the June 4, 2024 primary approaches, DC voters will have the opportunity to choose Councilmembers in Wards 2, 4, 7, 8 and At Large. DC Voters for Animals sent out our DCVFA 2024 Candidate Questionnaire to assess how the individuals running to represent you think about our animal friends. We want to know how much the political hopefuls care and who the leaders amongst the pack are!

Candidate responses across DCVFA’s six categories of interest.

You can access the full suite of candidate responses to see their positions with your own eyes. Some of the standout responses come from Brooke Pinto in Ward 2 who committed to moving the Fur Products Prohibition Act forward this year, Armonte Wilson in Ward 8 who presented a 7-point plan for animal protection in the District, Ebony Payne who ties together animals in our food system and food justice in Ward 7, and Ebbon Allen in Ward 7 who makes the connection between animals mistreated in meat processing plants and exploitation of BIPOC and marginalized workers. Of course there are many factors to consider when deciding on a candidate to support, including

  • How their campaign platform intersects with other priorities for DC

  • Their likelihood of winning (and thus being able to implement the policies they endorse)

  • Their level of investment in building relationships with DCVFA and the community in their ward

These are considerations to keep in mind as you review their responses; if you find gems that stand out to you, we want to hear about it!

DCVFA supporters can share your thoughts on who you support and which responses most caught your eye via our online feedback form (open March 1-7, 2024) and at our two public engagement events: one online and one in person. We will present on the results, then give DCVFA supporters a chance to engage in dialogue around considerations of who our community should endorse. Click the links to RSVP.

Now is a good time to register to vote or confirm your registration so you can speak up for animals in our democracy! The primary election is June 4.
