2022 General Elections: Animal Issues & Candidates

The general election on November 8 will not only shape midterm results for Congress, voters will decide on local level policy-makers responsible for our laws pertaining to animal protection.

The At Large Race

In DC, the marquee election will be the At-Large race. Unlike many of the other seats where the winner of the June 2022 Democratic Primary is likely to win in November, the At Large race is different. Of the four At Large seats on DC Council, two are open every election, meaning that voters cast their ballot in favor of TWO At Large candidates. Importantly, under DC Home Rule law, one of the candidates must be from a non-majority party (meaning that voters must choose at least one candidate who is not a Democrat). There are eight candidates running for the two seats, including Republican, DC Statehood Green, and Independent contestants. Here are their responses to the DCVFA Questionnaire:

  • Elissa Silverman (I)

  • Graham McLaughlin (I)

  • Jennifer Muhammad (I)

  • Karim Marshall (I)

  • David Schwartzman (SG)

  • Anite Bonds (D)

At Large Candidates who did not respond: Fred E. Hill (I), Giuseppe Niosi (R) Kenyan McDuffie (I)

ANC Races

Voters will also have the chance to weigh in on the most local form of government: Advisory Neighborhood Commissions. ANC Commissioners are elected every year to serve the interests of each Single Member District (SMD)—there are 345 SMDs in the 40 ANCs throughout DC’s eight wards. For the first time this year ANC Candidates had a chance to weigh in on their animal protection views and priorities for DC, here are their responses. See the ANC candidates that DC Voters for Animals endorsed!

Existing Endorsements

In the June primary election DC Voters for Animals had the honor of endorsing several local candidates. Of the six we endorsed, five went on to win their position and have our renewed support as they advance to the general election.
